This is the final post in Webstruxure’s “7 Things You Should Know About Social Media” series. So naturally, it’s the best one, because it contains the best news: there is no mystery about social media.
Like any comparatively new field, social media has its jargon and its specialists, its proponents and its detractors. But when it comes right down to it, social media is just another way of talking to people. And unless your line of work is top secret, your business or organisation probably spends a lot of time talking to people anyway.
What should you do when you talk to people? You should:
- Be polite
- Be honest
- Be natural
- Be engaging
- Accept praise gratefully
- Accept criticism gracefully
- Acknowledge when you’ve made a mistake, promise to fix it, carry out that promise, and report back when the fix is made
- Say what you mean
- Mean what you say
If you can manage that in ordinary conversation (which, I hope, most of us can, most of the time), then there is no reason not to expect that you and your staff can’t manage that on social media as well.
Of course, there are roles that specialists can play: setting up your social media presence, or managing it for you if the workload is too much. I probably wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t remind you that Webstruxure is happy to help you with your social media presence, and that you are welcome to contact us about it.
But there is no mystery about social media. I hope you decide to join the conversation.
